When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, many conservatives believed it would lead to a sharp decline in abortion rates across the country. However, the reality has been quite the opposite. Not only have abortions not decreased, but they have actually increased—particularly through the use of chemical abortions.
In 2023, the first full year following the Dobbs decision, over 1 million abortions were performed in the U.S.—an 11% increase from 2020, the last year for which full data was available. One major factor? The rise of medication abortion, which now accounts for more than 63% of all abortions in the country.
The Rise of Mail-Order Abortion
Despite state-level abortion bans, medication abortion remains widely accessible through the mail. Organizations like Aid Access, Plan C, and overseas pharmaceutical suppliers continue to ship abortion pills even to states with the most restrictive laws. Some of these providers work within legal loopholes, while others openly defy state bans, arguing that federal regulations allow them to distribute mifepristone and misoprostol.
There is a stark difference in where and how abortion pills are obtained:
U.S.-Based Providers: Clinics and telehealth services require a consultation or online questionnaire, but without in-person education, medical oversight, or emotional support, abortion pills are dispensed through certified pharmacies. Legal battles persist over whether the FDA’s approval of mifepristone supersedes state bans, allowing online pharmacies to continue shipping the medication even to states where abortion is outlawed.
International Providers: Websites based in countries like India and Mexico offer abortion pills without a prescription or medical oversight. While these pills are often cheaper and more accessible, they come with significant risks, as some providers sell unregulated or counterfeit medication with no guarantee of proper dosage or instructions. As a result, more women are using these pills beyond the recommended gestational limit, leading to an increase in severe physical complications and emotional distress.
Funding Concerns
While pro-life groups initially saw a surge in donations immediately following the fall of Roe, pro-life pregnancy centers are now facing a major funding crisis. As of January, 2025 there were 19 states (38%) with full bans or tight restrictions on abortion. In many of these states Executive Directors report that their overall donor base has begun to shrink or seem to be giving less.
In recent months, the conversation has resurfaced as many pregnancy center leaders anticipate another major shift under the new, more conservative administration. While some donors may believe that stricter policies will naturally lead to fewer abortions, those on the front lines know the reality is far more complex. Many fear that their donor base doesn’t fully grasp the challenges they face—particularly the continued rise of chemical abortions. As funding for pregnancy centers dwindles, and the need for an increase in trained medical staff rises, leaders worry that without greater awareness and support, they will be left unprepared to meet the growing needs of women in their community.
The Misconception
One of the biggest challenges for centers is the misconception that abortion has been effectively reduced or eliminated in the U.S. In reality, abortion access has shifted rather than disappeared. Women are still seeking and obtaining abortions even in states where strict abortion laws exist. To put things into perspective, our organization facilitated more than 28,000 connections between women who were actively shopping for abortion and their local center. This is staggering when you consider that we are just one organization competing against major players like Planned Parenthood, vying for the same women. Not to mention that there many centers still lacking proper outbound or digital marketing strategies necessary to connect with those in need.
There’s no doubt that the pro-life community is strong and committed to supporting centers, but it may be time to reignite the passion of donors and raise their awareness about the shift in the landscape.
This means:
Making donors more aware of the ongoing abortion crisis, particularly the rise in chemical abortions and the increasing complexity of abortion access.
Raising awareness of the urgent need for digital strategies and technologies that can effectively reach abortion-seeking women online, where the battle is increasingly being fought.
Emphasizing the urgent need for expanded medical services and licensed medical staff to provide comprehensive care that not only matches but exceeds the capabilities of the abortion industry.
Promoting the importance of updated training and practices tailored to address the unique challenges of today’s generation, ensuring that centers are fully equipped to serve women in crisis with the highest level of professionalism and care.
The fight for life has evolved in many ways, and to remain effective, our centers are more crucial than ever. We must respond to these shifts—and encourage our supporters to stay engaged—so that the abortion industry does not continue to grow in this new, more covert form. It’s vital that we communicate these changes regularly with our donors to ensure their continued support in this evolving battle.
